Pediatric Dental Crowns
Portland, OR
Here at Great Grins for KIDS - Portland in Portland, OR we offer dental crowns for kids. A crown (or cap) is a covering that wraps around and protects the entire surface of your child's afflicted tooth. Crowns function and look exactly like the original, healthy tooth. Crowns can even extend the life of the tooth compared to a filling since it serves to strengthen as well as protect the natural tooth.
Reasons for Choosing a Dental Crown
Dental crowns could be the solution to a variety of issues your child might be experiencing with their smile including: • |
Fractured or broken teeth
|
• |
Severe tooth decay
|
• |
Cosmetic concerns
|
• |
Fractured fillings
|
• |
Tooth protection following a root canal |
Types of Dental Crowns
There are several materials that you can choose from for your child's crown. Dr. Fariba Mutschler or Dr. Mark Mutschler will discuss the pros and cons of each with you, and help to decide which material best suits your child's needs. Three options we are likely to discuss are: • |
All Porcelain: Crowns made of all porcelain are perhaps the most aesthetically pleasing, as they will match the natural color of your children's teeth. All porcelain crowns are wonderful options for the teeth front and center of your child's smile.
|
• |
Gold: Gold crowns are strong, durable, and often recommended for rear molars. These crowns are strong against normal wear, as well as corrosion and fracturing. This makes them a great solution for patients with clenching or grinding habits. These crowns are also gentle on surrounding teeth while sealing and protecting the afflicted tooth from any recurrent decay. For patients with cosmetic concerns, these crowns are less noticeable on back molars where they won't typically affect your child's smile.

• |
Porcelain Fused to Metal: With this crown, you get the best of both worlds: the durability of metal and the aesthetics of porcelain. A metal base encases and protects the tooth, and an outer layer of porcelain provides a natural look that keeps your child smiling confidently. |
The Dental Crown Procedure
If a dental crown is the right choice for your child, you can plan on scheduling two appointments. During the first visit, we will prepare the afflicted tooth by removing any decay, and then the surface of the tooth will be fitted for the new crown. We'll take impressions of your child's teeth so we can customize the crown to match their natural size, shape, and color. We're likely to fit your child with a temporary restoration to keep them smiling while we wait for the permanent crown to be perfected.
During the second appointment, we'll remove the temporary crown and carefully place the permanent crown in its new home. Dr. Fariba Mutschler or Dr. Mark Mutschler will also make sure of proper bite and spacing.
Following your appointment, proper oral hygiene is essential, and we encourage regular dental visits. We look forward to seeing you at each check-up to ensure that your child's crown is in the best possible shape.
