How to Help Manage a Toothache in Your Child Until They Can Get SeenAs a parent, it's a helpless feeling to know that your child is in pain and there's nothing you can do about it, especially if it's a toothache. There is hope! There are several things that you can do to ease your child's discomfort until you can get them in to see us.

Managing a Toothache With a Child

As adults, we can recognize tooth pain in ourselves and we are able to find relief until we get in to have it taken care of. Children, on the other hand, don't understand that there's an end in sight for their pain.

They experience an incessant that could throb and for the young child, there is no end to the pain. Toothaches are generally caused by erosion or decay that gets deep into the tooth and penetrates the pulp chamber. The nerves in the pulp chamber are very sensitive and this is where the pain comes from.
So, what's a parent to do? First, call our office and set up an appointment.

By letting our staff know the situation, we will do our best to accommodate you and get your child in as soon as possible. Second, try a warm water salt rinse. Be cautious not to use water that is too hot or too cold as this can increase the pain. Adding a teaspoon of table salt to the warm water and rinsing their mouth out with the solution can help relieve the tenderness.

Cold packs applied to the outside of the cheek can also be helpful. Over-the-counter pain relievers are appropriate for older children. Keep in mind that a gentle, nurturing attitude toward your child when they are in pain can go a long way. We hope you never find yourself in this situation, but if you do, call us right away and try these tips to ease your child's discomfort.
My daughter was a little nervous to have her dental work done but everyone in the office was super friendly and very reassuring and that helped her nervousness go away. Thanks for the excellent dental experience. ~ Lilyana G.
